About Me

Welcome to Montessori Momski!  My name is Lacosta and I am a SAHM to two very talented little people.  I wasn't always a SAHM.  I attended college at Louisiana State University (Geaux Tigers) where I completed a Bachelors in Anthropology in 2003 then continued my education at Western Michigan University for my Masters in Anthropology (awarded 2005).  I held a few secretarial and service/retail jobs until I secured a 6-month contract as a historical archaeologist on a DOT project in Washington State.  When the project completed, I decided that I needed more secure employment and took a job as a legal secretary/ assistant.  I continued this work until just before Bug was born.  I have always wanted to raise my own children rather than paying someone else to do it so my husband and I made some changes and scarifies to make it work.  And my life as a SAHM was born.

At the start of this blog I was heavily involved in a local mom's group, Milwaukee Mommies, where I served as the Waukesha County Moderator.  My experiences with this group gave birth to my desire to create a Montessori environment and subsequently, this blog.  This was not my first introduction to Maria Montessori or her work as I studied her during my Anthropology graduate studies. We have since moved to Morgan Hill, CA as of February 2012 where we are enjoying wonderful Bay weather and it's active lifestyle. My husband and I enjoy moving across the country and have lived in Michigan, Kansas, Washington and Wisconsin during our 7 years of marriage (as of Jan 2012).

Each place we have lived has influenced how we want to raise our kids and who we hope they will be.  I consider myself moderately crunchy with a bit of a Southern twang.  I am a breastfeeding, co-sleeping, part-time cloth diapering, babywearing, recycling, quasi-Montessorian with a affinity for the Love & Logic style of parenting.  Call me a contradiction ;)  What it all comes down to is I want what is best for my kids and since there is no 'right' way to raise a kid, I adapt different methods to suit our families needs and personalities.  In the end, I hope my kids become happy, well adjusted, functional members of society.

My blog names comes not from my sheer hatred for skiing (I seriously hate it with a passion) but my married name.  My darling husband is Polish and I graciously took his name that ends -ski.  Bug's nickname was initially Bubbski and so I became Momski.  My other blogs include Everything Momski, The Quilter Momski and The Dinner Diva Momski.
